Chalk streams are among the most precious and rare freshwater ecosystems on Earth, which we are so lucky to enjoy across Kent. They are characterised by their crystal-clear, mineral-rich waters, filtered through ancient chalk bedrock, which support a unique array of wildlife. Despite their global rarity and ecological value, these rivers are still not recognised as irreplaceable habitats within planning policy.
Our rare chalk streams are under threat - particularly from agricultural runoff, climate change, and built development. You can help protect them!
Each month since October 2024 we have been part of a team of Kent Wildlife Trust volunteers monitoring the diversity and abundance of a select groups of invertebrates (mayfly larvae, caddis fly larvae and freshwater shrimp on the River Darent).
Chalk streams are an ecologically significant freshwater habitat and are globally rare. England holds approximately 85% of the global total with the majority of those dotted around the south, including in Kent.
