Now bison, pigs, ponies and cattle have been introduced to the Blean, hear the latest about the project on this guided tour of the woods.
About the event
In summer 2022 European bison were introduced to West Blean and Thornden Woods as part of the ground-breaking Wilder Blean project, and Iron Age pigs, Exmoor ponies and Longhorn cattle joined them early in 2023.
Join this safari to hear about how the animals are managing the land naturally, including the specific habits and characteristics of each of the species that led to them being chosen for the project. Your guide will also explain how the animals' behaviour will replace some of the management normally carried out by humans with machinery in the woodland, how their presence should breathe life back into the landscape, improving habitats and increasing biodiversity, and how their impact will be monitored moving forward.
As you explore the woodland your guide will be on hand to answer any questions and to point out some of the seasonal wildlife that has been abundant here for much longer than the latest additions.
This event does not include tracking the Wilder Blean animals, please do not expect to see them during this safari. The tour will introduce you to the wilding project within the context of the history of this woodland. If you are looking for detailed insight into the animals introduced as part of the wilding project, and to try tracking them, please see our Bison Ranger Experiences.
This safari is aimed at an adult audience, 14-17 year olds may attend with an accompanying adult over 18. Hoping to bring the children? Family Safaris are available during school holidays, see our what's on page and search 'family safari' for availability.
