Vegetation Survey Volunteer

You’ll support our team in carrying out vegetation surveys at our Heather Corrie Vale and Ironhurst Valley reserves.

Dates: -
Location: Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and Malling, Tunbridge Wells

Why do we need you?

You’ll support our team in carrying out vegetation surveys using a method called the Permanent Point-centred Quarter Transect (PPCQT). This rapid approach involves:

  • Setting up transects across reserves
  • Recording herbaceous plant species and their abundance
  • Measuring woody vegetation structure (e.g. plant height, distances, diameters)
  • Helping track how habitats are changing over time

Who we’re looking for:

  • We'd really like to hear from individuals with botanical identification skills
  • Comfortable working outdoors (sometimes in uneven terrain and variable weather)
  • Good attention to detail
  • Willingness to learn - no prior experience of the PPCQT method required

Why get involved?

  • Contribute to meaningful conservation work
  • Learn practical ecological survey skills
  • Spend time outdoors on beautiful nature reserves
  • Meet like-minded people and be part of a friendly team

Time commitment:

Surveys will take place on selected days throughout the field season. You can join as many sessions as you like.

Location:

We'll be conducting these surveys at Heather Corrie Vale (nr. Sevenoaks) and Ironhurst Valley (nr. Lamberhurst) reserves.

Things to consider before applying:

  • Being reasonably physically fit is beneficial as some the areas have rough terrain, tussocks, boggy ground etc. that you need to be able to negotiate. There may also be areas of scrub and brambles to traverse through.
  • Full training is given and you’ll only be asked to do work you are comfortable with.
  • The volunteer role is open to applicants over the age of 18
