Tutors have been left devastated after equipment was set on fire with benches and teaching equipment broken into pieces. The area had been created by volunteers at Sevenoaks Visitor Centre, taking them weeks to build and since their creation had enjoyed by hundreds of children helping them to cultivate an understanding and connection with the natural world.
The damage was discovered on Friday, 14th June and has been reported to Kent Police. The cost to replace the property is estimated to be around £2,000 but more valuable is the time of the volunteers needed to help recreate the forest school area which will take several weeks.
Forest School is an educational approach that places nature at the core of learning. Its ethos is rooted in the belief that outdoor experiences provide a rich and holistic environment for children's development. It emphasises hands-on, experiential learning in a woodland setting, encouraging curiosity, creativity, and resilience.
Kent Wildlife Trust uses the dedicated area for toddlers, school children, home-educated youngsters and on occasion pensioners, and whilst the team admits the arson has set them back, they have vowed to build back stronger for the benefit of the community.
