We’ve been working on doing some coppicing over at Brenchley Wood to create more light filled spaces and regenerate the woodland as well as creating habitat piles for nesting birds and insects; more recently we’ve been doing some infrastructure work at Chilston Ponds, taking out old tree fencing that was put in to protect growing trees, but is no longer necessary as the trees have grown big enough now. It’s more beneficial to take the metal fencing out so our sheep don’t get caught up in it as it breaks down, but we leave the posts up so that they can be used as perching points for birds, scratching posts for the sheep and also dead wood for insects. We also fixed a broken stile that had become dismantled so people can do the circular walk that’s there again (photos attached of the more recent work).
