High Downs Volunteer Group

Working across several locations in a mixture of ancient chalk grassland & ancient woodland means there is always plenty to do!

Location: Canterbury, Folkestone and Hythe
  • Commitment: Come as little or as often as you like.

  • Frequency: Fridays

  • Location: Reserves near Stelling Minis, South of Canterbury

Why is it important?

A mix of woodland and grassland sites, full of orchids, insects and ancient woodland plants. 

Role Overview

You will be joining a team of enthusiastic volunteers to carry out key conservation management work across a number of sites in the Dover area. Tasks will vary depending on the season:

  • Spring &  Summer - Path maintenance, fence repairs, bracken bashing
  • Autumn & Winter - Scrub and woodland coppicing

Experience, Knowledge and skills needed for this role:

  • No previous experience required.
  • You should be happy to work outdoors in all weathers.
  • Willing to work as part of a team.
  • Enjoy meeting new people.

Commitment and Considerations

Every Friday 10am—2.30pm.
Come weekly, monthly, or ad-hoc!

  • Reasonable expenses can be paid
  • You will need to be fairly physically fit as many of the reserves have steep hills, rough terrain, tussocks etc. that you need to be able to negotiate
  • The volunteer role is open to applicants over the age of 16

What's in it for the volunteers?

Full training is given and you’ll only be asked to do work you are comfortable with. There is also the potential to undertake further training such as leading groups safely, First Aid, and Brushcutter.
