Meet Kent Wildlife Trust's experienced reserve wardens for a hands-on workshop identifying moths found around Tyland Barn.

Area Wardens Rosemary and Rob love seeing what moths are flying around Kent Wildlife Trust’s offices at Tyland Barn of an evening! This is a wonderful opportunity for you to join them as they unload their traps in the morning and identify the species that have been caught before releasing them.

You’ll learn all about the different types of trap that have been used, and the benefits of the various trapping techniques. You’ll spend some time looking at moth identification, picking up lots of hints and tips from the Wardens, and then start to unload the traps. There will be hot drinks to enjoy as you work your way through the traps practicing and developing your identification skills with expert guidance.

Rosemary and Rob have years of moth trapping experience, and have previously identified the Brimstone Moth, White Ermine, Muslin Moth, Common Quaker, Coxcomb Prominent and Ruby Tiger during trapping sessions at Tyland Barn. There’s also the possibility of finding Elephant, Poplar and Eyed Hawkmoths, depending on the conditions.

If you’re interested in having a go at setting up the traps, you may also like one of our Wildlife After Dark experiences at Tyland Barn. Check the Wilder Kent Experiences page for a full list of upcoming dates.

Toilet facilities are available at Tyland Barn. Hot drinks will be provided but bringing a bottle of water is recommended.

Our reserves team are used to working outdoors in all weathers, so we aim to go ahead with these experiences wherever possible. On occasion the warden may decide conditions are extreme enough to cancel the planned date, either because they'll be unable to deliver the event to a high enough quality or because it is unsafe to go ahead. If this is the case you will be offered an alternative date or refund. Unfortunately, we cannot refund tickets if the event takes place but you choose not to attend.

Please give us 30 days notice wherever possible if you are no longer able to attend. The small group sizes on these experiences mean cancellations have a large impact on the viability of the event, and it can be difficult to fill places at short notice or after an event has initially reached capacity. Thank you.
