Learn a traditional countryside skill whilst contributing to the restoration of a planted hedge at Lydden Temple Ewell.
About the event
Lydden Temple Ewell is a spectacular chalk downland reserve in the Dover area, with an abundance of orchids, butterflies and crickets.
During this hands-on workshop, the Reseve Warden for Lydden Temple Ewell will introduce you to the traditional craft of hedge-laying, explaining the history of the technique, the process involved, and the importance of hedgerows as a habitat for wildlife. You'll then have a go yourself, contributing to the restoration of a 500 metre stretch of hedge and improving this habitat at the reserve.
For safety reasons, this event is only suitable for over 18s. You'll be taking part in a physical activity, so a reasonable level of mobility and fitness will be required. However, there will be no expectation for you to do any more than you feel comfortable with, so please just let the warden know if you'd like to take a break at any point.
Please wear practical outdoor clothing suitable for the weather conditions with sturdy footwear, and bring a pair of work gloves.
Please note that there are no toilet facilities available at the reserve, and no refreshments available to purchase. Please bring a packed lunch and drinking water, and any snacks or a flask of hot drink if you'd like them. You might like to bring a camping chair or something to sit on as you'll be at the reserve all day.
