Family Safari: Bison and Butterflies
West Blean and Thornden Woods,
Thornden Wood Road. To access the Wilder Blean project, use West Blean and Thornden Woods car park. , Canterbury, Kent, CT6 7NZAbout the event
Join us on this family friendly safari to share the joys of the natural world with the whole family!
Discover how the natural behaviours of bison impact the landscape, helping other wildlife including lizards, dung beetles and heath fritillary butterflies- just like in the new children's book, The Bison and the Butterfly.
You'll also hear all about the pigs, ponies and cattle that have been introduced to the Blean alongside the bison. They work brilliantly together as a team, all using their different skills and characteristics to make these woods wilder.
Giving a family focused insight into the Wilder Blean project, this safari is perfect for young wildlife lovers and environmentalists and will be suitable for complete beginners or those with some background knowledge of the project.
You'll be heading out on a guided walk through the reserve, through the areas that are home to ponies, cows and lots of other wildlife. Please be aware that we won't see the bison, as their distance from the car park makes the walk too long for an organised children's event. If you would like to have a go at spotting them you are welcome to stay after the event to walk up to the bison enclosure, your guide will be happy to point you in the right direction.
The woods can be very muddy, even in the summer, so please make sure everyone is wearing suitable footwear such as wellies.
