Family Safari: Beavers and Buffalo
About the event
Join us on this family friendly safari to share the joys of the natural world with the whole family!
Discover how the natural behaviours of beavers and water buffalo are changing this reserve for the better- clearing channels, improving water flow and creating deadwood to attract other wildlife by improving the habitat.
You'll hear all about Ham Fen's beaver introduction project, the first of its kind back in 2001, learn the signs of beaver activity, and look out for evidence of recent activity.
Giving a family focused insight into beaver release projects, this safari is perfect for young wildlife lovers and environmentalists and will be suitable for complete beginners or those with some background knowledge of this or similar projects.
You'll be heading out on a guided walk through the reserve, including the fenland. Please be aware that we won't see beavers, they are nocturnal and elusive even then!
One of the effects of resident beavers is excellent water retention, meaning Ham Fen is always wet underfoot and could be extremely boggy if we have a wet spring and summer. Wellies are essential and we would recommend clothing you don't mind getting muddy.
